Câmara Municipal S. João da Madeira launched a competition for a new Multi Sports Pavillion. Zaha Hadid entered the competition with an interesting solution. The roof structure is designed to achieve a 116 m clear span over the existing sports pavilion.
The roof structure included the following aspects:
Primary Steel Truss
The primary steeltrusses follow the exterior geometry of roof.
They support the secondary trusses and transfer the roof load onto the columns that are defined where partition walls exist.

Secondary Timber Truss
The secondary timber trusses are perpendicular to the primary trusses and provide restraint to the
primary trusses every 6.0 m. The sections will be formed from laminated timber.
These elements provide support to the roof and transfer the load from the roof to the primary trusses.
The ground level and basement structures are proposed as in situconcrete with a regular column
arrangement in the basementand walls / columns between the venues to support the roof structure above.
