A scrollytelling project about the gender pay gap in the UK
Falling through the gap is a data visualization project done by the Visual Journalism team at BBC News that explains how the UK´s pay gap sizes up.
On a technical level, the team wanted to explore how to use scroll to animate visualizations and control narratives for the first time. Because of the nature of the project, it also meant visualizing more than 10,000 elements in the browser. To do so we used WebGl and combined it with D3.js.
The project is based on animations that happen while the user scrolls. To avoid causing problems to people with motion sickness, our developer implemented an animation toggle that allows users with vestibular impairments to turn off the animations easily if they want/need.
