Coronavirus Illustrations
BBC News

Back in May, I had the opportunity to work in illustrating different topics about how people were going through the Coronavirus pandemic. Quite a nice change and break from the hard news and data visualisation projects I had done at the start of lockdown.

I don't consider myself an illustrator. However, I learned how to use Illustrator following tutorials on how to do vector portraits even before I knew what infographics were. It was nice to go back to the beginnings and feel a bit out of my comfort zone.

I tried to add as much emotion to the drawings as possible. We all are going through lockdowns and, therefore, we're undergoing similar experiences: missing people we love, having to stay at home, or learning how to bake bread. Having that personal link helped to illustrate the articles.
1. Socialising virtually
2. Watching films and using streaming services
3. Spending more time with the people we live with - and helping neighbours
4. Exercising outside and in
5. Cooking, gardening and reading
I would tell myself...
Be around loved-ones
Buy hand sanitiser. Buy flour.
Go to the pub as much as possible

"Literally everyone on the conference call would have been able to see"
"I do feel guilty - I'm not trying to bump her off"
"I've got really drunk to forget how lonely I am"
Thank you!
