Rock & Gem Redesign

OPPORTUNITY
Knowing the difference between good and bad design is essential to becoming a good designer. Knowing how to take a bad design and make it better while still sending the same message to the audience makes a great designer. In this project I was asked to choose a poorly designed magazine and redesign the cover and one of the main spreads. This opportunity gave me experience working with layout and print design while forcing me to learn how to work with large amounts of copy, laying it out in an effective way.

SOLUTION
The original Rock & Gem magazine had a lot of flaws, to say the least, but the overall message of the magazine was quite clear. This magazine is all about the art of collecting rock, minerals, and gems. Its main goal is to try keep this fading hobby alive. Gaining inspiration from magazines about hobbies that I enjoy such as film and design, I changed the style of the magazine to be more eye-catching so it would interest a larger audience. With a brand new logo eye-catching logo and a solid theme this goal was achieved. The whole treasure map feel adds to the excitement and idea of searching for these different buried treasures. With this new design, the magazine can inspire newcomers to discover and develop a new love for the hobby of rock collecting.
