GAVIN HIPKINS: THE DOMAIN

A mid-career survey publication for New Zealand based artist Gavin Hipkins. 240pp, casebound. The cover is printed CMYK on linen finish stock and trimmed flush on 3 sides to expose the greyboard edges, with a one colour belly band wrapped vertically around the back case and glued on the inside.
The binding and trimming which exposes the cover boards references Hipkins’ ongoing interest in Brutalist architecture. The exposed materials echo the use of raw exposed concrete that is a core construction method of The New Brutalism.
The book utilises two paper stocks: a 150gsm matt art paper printed CMYK plus spot varnish for the main essays and plate section; and an Archive Texts section printed one colour onto 124gsm uncoated grey paper stock.
All headlines and body text for The Domain are set in an unnamed and as yet unreleased version of a new type family, drawn by a New Zealand based Klim type foundry.
