LETTERS FROM ICELAND
Commissioned illustrations for Womankind magazine - Issue 16: May-August 2018
Womankind magazine is an international print newsstand magazine for women on art and culture. Womankind is published in Australia, distributed in 26 countries. Womankind magazine represents a new era for women: Womankind is an advertising-free women’s magazine on self, identity and meaning in today’s society. Womankind features the top journalists, authors and artists in a 132 page, perfect-bound magazine – offering a signature mix of reporting and commentary on culture, creativity, philosophy, nature and ways to live a more fulfilling life. Womankind’s aim is to introduce ideas that challenge contemporary thought and conditioning.
Each issue is dedicated to a country. Issue 16 is on Iceland. Womankind interviews three everyday women on their life. I was provided with basic photographs of the women to create the illustrations.
For the background, I was requested to implant the concepts of Iceland: White, Northern Lights, Gyrfalcon (national animal of Iceland), Modern, and Minimalism.
I designed a format as a constant composition for this series: geometric circular shapes with white backgrounds, to represent modernity and minimalism. Three gyrfalcons in different postures are designed in the circular shapes, as well as pattern-lazed northern-lights. My signatures and stamps are parts of the compositions. They balance the blank white background out.
I combined Chinese art traditional techniques & tools with western watercolor techniques & materials in the executions.
