John Callahan's profile

Callahan Family Crest

Before coming up with any sketches, I first discussed this project with my family at dinner one night.  We ran through various ideas, mainly being our Irish heritage, my dad's origination from Nebraska which fostered a love for Nebraska Cornhuskers football and our grandma and grandpa's store in the small town in which they loved.  My dad also pointed out how sports and watching sports are a huge part of our family's hobbies.  These teams include the Diamondbacks, Cornhuskers, and Fighting Irish.  We also have an annual ski trip to Colorado every year that everyone in our family loves.  We are also a funny family (at least to us) and enjoy watching various old comedies.  One particular comedy is Tommy Boy, which is especially special to us because our last name, Callahan, is the protagonist's last name.
When coming up with my sketches I had a various amount of ideas that I thought of.  First, I was almost certain that I wanted to have a circular, more modern shape for the shield.  I also had a lot of icons, including the four in my final draft, my grandparent's store, the D-Backs logo, and the sign from Tommy Boy.  However, after sketching, I realized I wanted to pursue a more simplistic style for my logos, and a store or complex D-Backs logo seemed to be too cumbersome.  I also liked the basic shield format with a banner.
I didn't have any rough drafts because I fleshed out my sketch ideas more than most students did.  When I hopped on to Illustrator, I was certain I was designing my final draft.
My final draft is the best because there are good similarities to my logos while also looking good.  They are nice and clean and they represent my object well (unless you don't know what the Cornhuskers logo is).  I think my shield and banner design are very good and also simplistic.  I like the font because while it looks good, it also has some nice symbolism as that was the font the Callahan sign in Tommy Boy was written in.
