BKW Figure Ground Exploration
In this project I took my initials B & W and used positive and negative space to create an active plane.
My first round of thumbnails lead to me figuring out that the sharp lines of a w were hard to match up with the rounded edges of a B. For the next step I realized I'd have to find a rounded W.
Before starting on this next round of sketches I found ever rounded W in my indesign program and played around with them. I narrowed it down to two of the most successful ideas before starting to delve deeper into the small intricacies of each.
I decided on the final idea and start to work on the center line of the way. When squaring off the edges for inside of the B I realized that it had started to create a 3rd letter which was reading as F. Since my middle initial wasn't F I figured I could take advantage of this and turn it into a K. This took Many Variations before deciding on the final version.
Once the final design was decided on I moved onto playing with texture and color. Since the initials are my own I wanted it to represent my art practice. As a 2D animator and After Affects artist I deal with technology as much as I deal with the principles of art. Finding a balance between these two things is a large part of my practice.
I decided that the blue of the mother board texture reflected the calm color palettes I enjoy along with the small details of technology that add more interesting elements to the composition. I decided to try different versions of the motherboard texture.
The final design uses the small metallic circles to create more contrast against the darker blue of the motherboard. The sea foam colored lines move across the composition and and follow the direction of the K. The right corner has more going on so it contrasts with the larger orbs and open blue space at the top left, which creates a gradient across the piece.
When it came to real life applications I wanted to play with the motherboard texture as an important aspect through out each item. Instead of just slapping the logo on I wanted the feeling of the logo to transport onto the objects.
Considering I focused on my digital roots when creating this logo I also decided to create a few gifs in adobe after effects. The first colored gif is a play on the matrix to relate to digital and the second gif plays on the idea of pixels forming together to create a larger image.
