Digital Home Eco System

This is a university collaboration project in which we had to design a digital home eco system. The collaborators are, Dave Forster, Guy Holden, John Hannah, Mike Groves and Dale Burn

THIS PROJECT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SAMSUNG. WE JUST USED IT AS A BRAND.

Here is the group video demonstrating how the product works in everyday life!

Self Assessment
In this project we were assigned into a group and were asked to design a product which will act as a gateway between user and the digital world. We then through brainstorming and meetings developed a product in which we called the Samsung Iris.
We decided we wanted a product in which the user could be able to share all there videos, music, pictures, youtube videos, social networking sites and so on with your friends anywhere at any time on any flat surface. This could be seen as their digital identity. We managed to create a product, the Iris and its aim was to share your digital identity with everyone with ease and to do so casually. Through group decisions we thought the best way to achieve this gateway would be best suited in the form of a projector which meant the user could use the product to share their digital identity on any flat surface at any time and anywhere and that it could fill a room so that everyone in the room could see or be involved. The Iris was a way of making the digital world more social.
We designed the Iris to be a small, portable, lightweight, ergonomic and inexpensive projector. We wanted to ensure that the Iris was well adapted for everyday life and to make sure that it was desirable enough for the general public. We wanted it to fit into the users transient environment, this was achieved by it being able to project onto any surface atany time, this gives the user alot of freedom as they will be able to share their digital identity with whoever they wished at any time and at any place they wanted to do so.
We also wanted the Iris to be used in professional circumstances. With the Iris' projector we thought it could be used for such things as presentations, pictures and so on for the board room or for pitching ideas. It could also help people out in certain situations for example if you were to get lost you could show someone a large map on a wall and they could show you where to go, instead of awkwardly showing them on a small phone screen. The Iris' technology will enable the user to access maps and other productivity tools, applications which can be downloaded at the appstore and their digital identity with ease.

As a group we first brainstormed ideas, we then drew concepts and from those concepts developed the product and decided upon the final design. After the CAD version of the product was made my task was to create a poster which demonstrated how the Iris worked and why we branded it as a Samsung product in which me and guy found the existing technology of the Smarthub tv which like the Iris is used for online purposes. We then made a simplified version of the Smarthub technology which would work in synchronicity with the Iris' rollerball technology which would allow the user to be able to use the Iris with ease and combined the mechanical element needed to pass the assignment. This poster can be seen in picture above.

We made the product as a group and the only individual pieces were made at the end however everyone advised and helped each other better their individual pieces with constructive criticism and ideas. We utilised peoples strengths and weaknesses to create the best outcome and I believe we did. From this project I think I have developed my teamworking skills, my ideas processes, my sketching, my concept selection techniques, my communication skills and my self criticism and evaluation.
