A warm and legible grotesk
Insider is custom made for Insider Consulting in Düsseldorf, Germany, my wifes coaching company. It is highly legible at small sizes because of the solid proportions and the well balanced inner forms. It is optimized for setting longer texts, but also works very well in headlines and leads.

My wife Gabriele Birnstein is a multi-talent. She writes fabulous short stories and intellectual social studies. Her texts are witty, emotional, deep but most of all very very personal.
Insider is an understatement, a bit shy but with a lot of personality. Just like my wife Gabriele Birnstein.
The origin
Insider started out as 'Novice'. I used this working title during the development process. It soon became clear to me that Insider was the right name for the font, since it's the company's name.
The character of the font evolved over time, but it's still rooted in the original sketches shown below.

Insider started out as 'Novice'. I used this working title during the development process. It soon became clear to me that Insider was the right name for the font, since it's the company's name.
The character of the font evolved over time, but it's still rooted in the original sketches shown below.
The sketches above are a good basic for a new font that I'm currently working on. And guess what that's called... Novice.
Insider font family
With 8 styles (4 weights + italics), the family is very versatile and can be used for designs with a complex typographical hierarchy. It has real italics and not mechanically slanted romans.
Insider is an OpenType Pro typeface, packed with lots of practical OpenType features. To use them you need OpenType savvy software, ofcourse.
Nike used Insider
I was really surprised that Nike used Insider for their Annual Report 2005. An acquaintance tipped me so I contacted Angelo Colletti, at the time Art Director at Nike Brand Design, hoping to get a hard copy. He was very helpfull but unfortunatelly I never got any copy.
If someone out there has a spare copy of the Nike Annual Report 2005, please send it to me. I'd love to have one!
