Direct Mailer – for 6 paper stock range & packaging

Direct Mail Package
Design Problem
In Project 2 for Graphic Design studio 1 the task is to design and produce a creative Direct Mail Package for a paper company. The task must be completed but Week 15 at the end of class on Wednesday the 24th of May. This includes a hard copy of a full colour mockup with paper samples included, together with correctly filled-in cover sheet in plastic pocket as well as digitally a print ready PDF and Presentation to client which includes research, process documentation and design solution. This is a design challenge of making the design complex and interesting enough but completing within a time frame. Week 16 following the submission it is required that a presentation and feedback appointment is attended, therefore it is important that the presentation file is clear and assists with presentation.
The client K.G.Doggetts is releasing a new range of laser friendly speciality paper stock and needs to advertise this through a well designed direct mail advertising package that the end user is aimed towards printers and graphic design studios, therefore this design must be out of the box and extremely smart in a creative way to capture their attention. Along with the design smart copy writing can be included to strengthen the design as both a paper range title and each of the 6 papers will all need to be named. There must be examples of the 6 papers as part of the package so being aware of the printing methods is vital. The package must be a suitable size and weight to not add an excessive cost to postage, so the mailer should be no bigger than an A4 when folder and no smaller than A5.
Design Rationale
The final paper sample mailer was successful as it clearly shows off the unique papers in an interesting way to gain the attention of printers and graphic design that may not have discovered or used this paper in a creative way if not marketed. It has a close connection between the interaction for the end user and the theme; as there is lanterns, paper names and patterns all closely connected.
Pushing through and trying something new with papers that I have never used or printed on was a challenging task but a rewarding one as I’m now much more open to pushing these limits at other points in time when designing. Exploring new three dimensional shapes was also some new and exciting that was part of the journey and in the process came up with some new ways of packaging and using 3D design.
There are areas that could be improved next time like testing out the packing with the paper that I planned on using, When it came to doing the final the lid would not fit so I had to rethink my plans and make a draw style closer. This could have been avoid if I had also purchased more paper to test and pay with in the first place. The instructions of how to interact with the paper sample could have been stronger with pictures if the time was available also, sticking to the timeline set out may avoid this next time.
Overall the paper sample here successful meets the requirements showing the paper and it use with details set out clearly typeset that can be mailed out for designers and printers to discover
