Los Angeles is home to one of the world's largest communities of up-and-coming artists and designers. The MESH is a new housing development that encourages working and networking within and outside of a tenant's creative discipline.
Located east of downtown LA in the Arts District, The MESH is perfectly situated in the heart of the city's creative culture. Nearby schools include Sci-Arc, FIDM, Art Center College of Design, and the University of Southern California.
The shape of the site and the environment around it were crucial during design and development. The MESH provides each resident with separate living and work spaces. Living spaces are located along the east edge of the site with the work spaces on the west. By separating these two activities, the action, noise and social opportunities of the work spaces are isolated from the calm and quiet of the living spaces.
Between the east and west buildings is a linear courtyard for public access to the commercial spaces at ground level and circulation space for residents on the upper levels. This interior space is protected from noise by the two volumes of the building.
Each apartment comes with a 10' x 10' x 25' work space (42 units total). The work spaces face downtown Los Angeles and act as the building's facade. A built-in desk runs the length of the north wall in each space and is bisected by powder-coated aluminum storage cubbies. This vertical storage space mimicks the push/pull aesthetic of the building itself.
A "digital Glass" window for each work space acts as a customizable canvas or message board, allowing the residents to post content for all to see. The building's facade appears as an ever-changing digital gallery of messages, artwork, and moving image.
