AFRIKABURN
The second year NMMU  architecture class of 2016 embarked on the first project at Afrikaburn for the School of Architecture. The project sought to explore the tectonic process of making as well as experience the cosmic landscape as described by Norberg-Schultz in 'Genius Loci'.

The social experimental atmosphere provided an opportunity to become contributors to the festival in the form of a sculpture. The design process began with a collection of ideas from the class. Parameters were set up to keep the ideas within the field of architecture. In the spirit of phenomenology, the sculpture became an interactive work. Through model making, material concern and the limit of transport the ideas were refined, with the result being a light weight wall construction. The wall dealt with the issue of separation. A cluster of paper tubes defined the separation. After the burn and subsequent collapse of the wall, the fire created an atmosphere of community.

Many thanks to the second year class for your contribution and our lecturer John Andrews for this incredible experience.
