CO-MODULAR
SECOND YEAR DESIGN
PROJECT FOUR
Co-modular seeks to explore the theme of mixed-use community living in the urban environment of Parliament Street, Port Elizabeth. Sustainability sits as a core concern and the idea of the prefabricated modular unit was explored. Place making manifests itself over the ground floor as a space for market and through a connection to a public square to the south.

The urbanised site creates the opportunity to use hierarchies of thresholds to set up highly private and public spaces. A concrete core connects the vertical circulation and acts as the community hub. The ground floor as a cafe, the first floor as a communal office kitchen/cafeteria and the second floor as a roof garden/braai area. The timber frame structure holds an arrangement of offices on the first floor and residential units on the second floor.
