"Brush Brush" (Un)Common Spring 2010 [Junior]

Quest for the [Un]Common "Brush Brush"
The third project in the motion graphics elective had us create a visual story of sorts that extrapolated on a rather common occurrence in our day. This was one of those projects where I knew exactly what I wanted to do as soon as I read the description. As a child I always used to ponder how despite all the positive banter there was in our culture about showering, we were in fact, committing genocide against millions of dust mites and other germs on our bodies every single time we showered, and like-wise for washing hands and brushing teeth.

And so this video is about the common occurrence of me brushing my teeth and in the process, destroying an entire town of germs who were otherwise living peacefully in my mouth. I am not exactly satisfied with this piece because there was more I wanted to do and show with it. The video could not be longer than 45 seconds and the fact that I choreographed mine to Ride of the Valkyries meant there was not much I could shoe-horn in, or it would be out of sync.  It gets its point across... I just wish I could've elaborated on the horrible destruction of the germs with sequences of them getting melted by mouthwash, etc.

We had to make an animatic before the final piece, and the class liked my illustrating style enough to encourage me to make the entire video out of that style. Initially I wanted the sequences of myself  to be full-motion as a homage to the movie Osmosis Jones, but fmv was forbidden on this assignment and so the whole thing was drawn instead. I made it a point to not trace anything to try and improve my drawing skills, since I am interested in digital painting as a skill. The quote at the beginning is my own, not saying its good, just saying. I couldn't find one that really fit the message I wanted to convey.

Overall, I like the concept behind this, and I may recreate it in the future with more time for more germy deaths.
