Paris of the Plains

PARIS OF THE PLAINS
for: GDVX 702 Ideation Models and Process (Savannah College of Art and Design)

Project Description: You will extend “seeing differently” beyond the investigation of ordinary objects and unrelated words. In this exploration, you will assess the original cultural, social, and value initiatives behind one of the most basic and long-lived forms of public communication: the newspaper. Based on this analysis, you will develop new artifacts that use existing ideas to create new forms of sharing events that document the human experience to transform mundane and benign information into meaningful human experiences.
There is no place in the world like Kansas City, which is why you’ve made the wise decision to live here (or at least try our bbq!) This sauce is the taste of Kansas City; smoky like it’s many barbecue joints, sweet like it’s people, and tangy: the taste of it’s past and future. KC was nicknamed “Paris of the Plains” during the Prohibition Era for the city’s rebellious quest for a great time. Whether you’re well seasoned or brand new to the city, there are constant discoveries to be made.

Message: Kansas City is a growing cultural center of the Midwest, unlike anywhere else in the world. New and current residents are proud to be apart of its’ exciting future.
Demographic: Babyboomers, specifically white males. This demographic is the least likely to be vegan or vegetarian as well, neither of which groups are interested in barbecue sauce.
Deliverables: Barbecue bottle labels Mini booklet
Experience: To see visuals, read stories, and taste the best part of Kansas City. Can be shared, usually eating is a shared experience, or given as a gift.
How will I incorporate my articles?:The articles are incorporated in the mini booklet, not taken word for word, but a short summary.
Where will the bottles be distributed?:
1. The barbecue will be it’s own brand, sold at Kansas City gas stations, grocery stores, and Kansas themed stores.
2. A small version of the bottle and booklet would be handed out with the Sunday newspaper during Barbecue Week in Kansas City.
Name of sauce/campaign: Paris of the Plains
Each letter in "PARIS" represents a cultural icon of Kansas City, further explained in the attached booklet.
Decisions: The colors align with the iconography in “Paris” as well as reinforcing colors of barbecue, and the colors of the KC NFL team, the Chiefs. The sunflower (in the bottle top) is the state flower of Kansas and also associated with Kansas City. Unlike other state flowers, it is extremely recognizable by residents. Typography choices support the original newspaper aesthetic of Franklin Gothic Condensed headlines and Utopian body copy.
