Public space policy plan, municipality of Apeldoorn, 2006 - 2008
Finalist Dutch Design Awards 2010
With the renovation of one of the main entrance boulevards to the royal palace (the Loolaan project by Han Goudswaard) in 2005 the awareness was raised that historical gravel verges in Apeldoorn are an inseparable part of the cities landscape identity. It offers unique opportunities to spice public space with an indigenous colour at a city scale and to revive a almost disappeared tradition.

Designing with gravel is now firmly anchored in the the ‘Grindbermen nota’ (gravel verge memo) as affirmed by the city counsel in 2008. A Dutch unicum by the fact that a historical pavement material is the starting point for a public space structure. In 2010 this indigenous and sensitive approach to cultural history was awarded with a nomination in the final of the prestigous Dutch Design Awards.
