So, I was contemplating the whole Trump election spectacle (or debacle, depending on your preferences) and I wanted to work up an illustration for a parody cover of The New Yorker magazine.
My idea was along the line of Trump's well-documented crude behavior and reportedly lascivious nature. Since he basically blew off reports of his routine groping of women as no big deal, the idea itself came rather quickly. I liked the sense of urgency to get it completed as I know from working with daily deadlines, working often from nothing, and creating especially a marquee image for a prominent magazine cover, getting it done quickly and on the mark is exciting and fun.
I had previously read that The New Yorker was doing a cover that was to be applicable regardless of who won the election. Neither candidate was a desirable result by any stretch of the imagination. Both candidates had an extremely low personal appeal and both inspired a certain amount of disgust (although a standard in politics) but seemed much more pronounced this time.
For the actual cover, the excellent Barry Blitt came up with the non-specific image shown above far left.
Then I saw this tweeted image (left) from one of my respected colleagues done by an unknown Irish artist, which was generally the same idea I had. I decided then to finish my version and post quickly or risk regurgitating an old idea. In addition, the actual New Yorker cover was to hit newsstands Monday morning.
My finished rendition (far right). And just for the fun of it, I used the same type font for the New Yorker masthead to create "The New Groper" masthead.
End note: I find it rather interesting that many of my admired cohorts from around the world, (Britain mostly) have been visually vocal in the coverage of the American election. Trump's administration is not beyond rational thinking of potentially being a massive embarrassment on the world stage with too many potential conflicts of interest in his various global enterprises to be a truly effective leader. And if he manages to not disgust and tick-off the world then his administration could, by default, be considered a rousing success.
There's nothing quite as satisfying as lowering one's standards as a nation and as a world player. Thanks a lot America...
