a little bar on a pier
Studio Project - 2012
Studio Project - 2012
The project is a renovation of an existing concrete “bunker” located in the historic “Wallace Shipyards” of North Vancouver, at the shore edge of a 200 ft wooden pier. As the site is semi isolated, the bar uses light as a design tool, to draw patrons to the site (from the sea bus) and to provide a special restaurant experience for patrons.
As the site is exposed to the elements, the bar uses a series of coloured glass panels to shade the upper level. These large sliding panels are operated by the users to change the lighting conditions inside the bar by flooding the upper floor with coloured, natural light during the day.
At night the effect is reversed as the light from the bar floods the dock with shards of colored light. The bottom floor of the bar remains intentionally enclosed, to provide a unique experience for users as they ascend from the darker area of the bar, into the upper floor, flooded with light.
