Alex La Guma (aka My First Lino Series)

Alex La Guma
My First Lino Series
Alex La Guma (1925-1985) was a South African novelist, journalist, cartoonist, and activist, among many other things. He was instrumental during the Struggle against Apartheid, both through his writing and direct involvement in  the liberation movement. He was the leader of the South African Coloured People's Organisation (SACPO), an active member of the Communist Party and one of the 156 defendants in the Treason Trial. He wrote many articles for publications such as New Age and Fighting Talk. All of his novels and short stories were highly influential and critically acclaimed:  A Walk in the Night (1962), And a Threefold Chord (1967) The Stone Country (1969), The Fog at the Season's End (1972) and Time of the Butcherbird (1979).  He left South Africa in 1966 in exile.  At the time of his death he was the Chief Representative for the ANC in Cuba.

La Guma formed the ideal subject matter for my first lino series, created over a few days during Christmas 2011, in Port Elizabeth, under the tutelage of a great South African artist, Norman Kaplan. The first picture displayed is the original pen drawing, based on one of the more famous photographs of the author. The others that follow are all lino prints.
