Know thy Food
An educational mailer and poster advocating for better school lunches
This mailer was sent to parents of school children to encourage them to advocate for healthier school lunches. I was inspired by the recent controversy over what chicken nuggets are actually made of and the fact that, whether all these claims are true or not, school are given healthy food like chicken by the Department of Agriculture and then spend up to three times what the food was worth to have it processed into a less healthy alternative. The article in the mailer covers facts like this and many others about the state of school lunches today.
"The Agriculture Department pays about $1 billion a year for commodities like fresh apples and sweet potatoes, chickens and turkeys. Schools get the food free. Many spend three times what the food is worth processing whole chicken into chicken nuggets, made from paste like this. Know what’s in your kid’s food, and spend time to teach them what real food looks like. Know thy food; the unexamined meal is not worth eating."
