Obon Festival Wayfinding

Obon is a traditional Japanese festival that makes use of paper lanterns floated down a river, so for the signage for the event, we chose light colors and flowing rectangular forms to hearken back to these lanterns. We divided the festival into zones and used bright, simple color-coding that correlated to each zone, keeping in mind that many families with children would likely attend the festival.

Tall banners along the roadways directed vehicular traffic to parking areas, while smaller three-tiered directional signs guided pedestrians around the event. A welcome sign at the entrance to the festival greeted guests with a map and schedule of the day's events on the front, with historical information about the festival on the back. The large sign with colored lanterns was placed on the roadway leading into the festival to let event-goers know they had arrived at the right place.

This project was done alongside my classmates Nicole Arao and Walter Wilkes.
