a project campaign with an international appearance and wide audience reach

The preservation of St. John’s Cathedral. To generate income for the ongoing restoration of this important national monument, Foundation National Monument Saint John decided to set up a project within the context of Hieronymus Bosch 500 International Event 2016. Our mission was to develop a project campaign with an international appearance and wide audience reach to collect as much money as possible.

Services: Naming, Branding, Design

Introduction
A Wondrous Climb (Een Wonderlijke Klim); within the scope of Hieronymus Bosch 500 year, you are invited to walk on the roof of the famous St. John’s Cathedral. An incredible and rare opportunity to admire the 96 stone carved sculptures on the cathedral’s high altitude flying buttresses – all of which are barely visible from the ground. The statuettes derive from the same period as the famous painter Hieronymus Bosch and show an interesting resemblance with his work. The event was initiated to generate income for the restoration of the cathedral.

Outcome
We had the honor and privilege to work on the concept of the identity and campaign for the event. The campaign image resembles a playing card, which in the vernacular is called a devil’s game. The color palette (blue and gold), is a metaphor for the divine, while the diagonal line emphasizes the flying buttresses. We used these elements as the foundation on which the identity and campaign is based.

Impact
The project exceeded all expectations regarding both visitors (more than 125.000) and income (about €800.000,-). An important contribution to the restoration/preservation of a national monument.

We reused all the scaffolding banners (below). Small bags were made from the mesh banners and large sturdy shoppers from the vinyl advertising banners. As well as being fully recyclable and biodegradable, all paper used has FSC® certification, meaning that the pulp used are all from managed forests.

A WONDROUS BAG

Event follow up — After the A Wondrous Climb event we were asked by Foundation National Monument Saint John to come up with an event follow-up. Our mission was not to design/produce a new product. Not only because budget was limited, but we felt it did not fit the nature of the project.

Services: Creative Direction, Eco Design, Social Design

Outcome
We made this sturdy bags from the existing vinyl advertising banners of A Wondrous Climb event. In collaboration with (eco)fashion designer Ellen Willink these bags are hand made by people with a distance to the labor market. Within the social workplace these people are given tasks according to their individual needs and skills, gaining work-experience and contributing meaningfully with supervision and guidance. Each of the bags has a unique design.

Impact
Following the success of the event, the bags were immediately sold out.
