Signs - 2008-2010
I spent a lot of time searching for signs of all different types and working on ideas for recycling and re-presenting them. Next time you are travelling along any road, look around and you will see a sign somewhere which either advertises something, tells you where to go, where you are or how to drive. Unless it is a particularly lonely stretch of road, there'll be a sign in sight.

Rosalie Gascoigne's most famous works were her cut-up road signs. I did a few of these but was always conscious that she had the idea first! It was a challenge finding a source for these signs that was legal. I then had to find a tool that would cut them in a straight line - that took a long time and much experimentation.

I learnt a lot from working with signs and it was fun and challenging. It also got me closer to Rosalie's work and gave me a greater appreciation of her and the influence she has had on so many artists. And although it's unlikely I will ever own an original work of hers, it is possible to have something similar.
