I started painting in 1998, inspired by an exhibition of Emily Kngwarreye's work. Although I have painted landscapes and portraits my work is now, and has been since 2000, abstract and geometric - it is what I am known for, my speciality. I focus on lines, patterns and shapes. In a world where little seems straightforward or easily understood and where we construct different meanings to suit our needs and history, my artworks are intended to come as something of a relief. There is a sense of respite and calm in the simplicity of the contemporary mandala-like compositions. With these geometrical abstractions I aim to provide a direct contrast with the very nature of life and human existence and a resting place from the rigours of existence.

My desire to paint is prompted by a need for peace within myself, looking for a sense of order where it seems, at first, as if none exists. Sometimes I take these different combinations of thoughts and cut them up and reassemble them to form rhythmical abstract patterns. This process where a new image emerges is what I find so appealing and stimulating.

Inspiration comes from a variety of sources; everyday images such as the colours and patterns of the Australian landscape, significant personal events, interior design and architecture, and artists such as Emily Kngwarreye and other indigenous artists, and Rosalie Gascoigne. Whilst these references exist I hope that you will be stimulated to interpret these works in your own way and provide your own personal responses to them.

My current work explores the use of a variety of materials and mediums to create geometrical artworks with lines and rhythms. Wooden boxes, discarded after markets in the south of France, provide a material which lends itself to manipulation by cutting and dying and converting from their one-off use to transport and display fruits and vegetables. The soft wood absorbs inks which complement and enhance the printed commercial designs and the grain of the wood. The multi-directional lettering is reminiscent of the way these boxes are piled in corners of the market, ready for disposal and destruction. I utilise the evidence left by past usage and other kinds of manipulation and handling to bring this material into another realm, another country (which no longer uses wooden boxes but cardboard and polystyrene) and another public.
