Quando i ragazzi del Birrificio Epica mi contattarono, mi dissero di essere rimasti colpiti da alcune illustrazioni che avevano visto sul mio canale Instagram. In particolare, avevano riconosciuto nei miei schizzi delle citazioni alle carte da gioco siciliane, derivate dalle originali carte della cosiddetta baraja española.
When the guys from Birrificio Epica contacted me, they told me that they were impressed by some of the illustrations they had seen on my Instagram channel. In particular, they recognized in my sketches the characters from the Sicilian playing cards, derived from the original playing cards of the so-called baraja española.
Il Re di Coppe, forte ma imbranato, ispirato al gigantesco ciclope Polifemo. - The King of Cups, strong but clumsy, inspired by the giant cyclops Polyphemus.
Il Re di Spade, fiero e imponente, nella sua posa a metà tra un guerriero e un supereroe. - The King of Swords, proud and bold in her pose somewhere between a warrior and a superhero.
Il mazzo della baraja contiene un minimo di quaranta carte, divise in famiglie di quattro semi: Oros, Copas, Bastos e Espadas, tradotti in italiano come Oro, Coppe, Mazze e Spade. Io mi ero divertito a reinterpretare le quattro figure dei re.
The baraja deck contains at least forty cards, divided into four suits families: Oros, Copas, Bastos and Espadas (Gold, Cups, Clubs and Swords). I was amused to reinterpret the four kings figures.

Così, dopo una chiacchierata telefonica, i mastri birrai e fondatori del Birrificio Epica mi dissero che per la loro nuova linea di birre artigianali avrebbero avuto il piacere di utilizzare le mie illustrazioni, che ritenevano molto adatte sia per la loro componente narrativa che per il gusto artigianale dello stile che avevo adottato.
So, after a telephone conversation, the master brewers and founders of the Birrificio Epica told me that, for their new line of craft beers, they would have the pleasure of using my illustrations, which they considered very suitable both for their narrative component that for the artisan taste of style that I had adopted.

Da grande amante della birra quale sono, fui molto contento della richiesta, e ripresi subito in mano le illustrazioni che, come accade spesso ai lavori personali, non erano proprio rifinite e avevano ancora bisogno di qualche ritocco...
As a great beer lover, I was very happy with the request and I immediately get back to work. The illustrations, as often happens to the personal work, were not quite finished and still needed some tweaking...
In uno dei concept originali il Re d'Oro teneva in mano un fulmine, poi eliminato nelle versioni successive. - In one of the original concept the Golden King was holding a thunderbolt, then eliminated in later versions.
Così, dopo aver ripulito le illustrazioni per facilitare la riproduzione in piccole dimensioni, abbinai a ogni tipologia di birra uno specifico re, scegliendo un colore che poteva identificare facilmente il gusto della birra ma rimanendo fedele al seme delle carte originali. L'unica licenza presa riguarda il Re d'Oro, nel quale il giallo del seme è usato solo per le decorazioni, preferendo un colore scuro per lo sfondo, per indicare meglio una birra scura come la Imperial Stout.
So, after cleaning up the illustrations to facilitate the small size reproduction, I have paired each type of beer with a specific king, choosing a color that could easily identify the taste of beer and the seed of the original cards. The only license I've taken concerns the King of Gold, in which the gold is only used for decoration, preferring a dark color for the background to better reflect a dark beer like the Imperial Stout.
