Cosmic Latte, A Rhythm in White

Cosmic Latte
A Rhythm in White
White... is not a mere absence of colour; it is a shining and affirmative thing, as fierce as red, as definite as black... – Gilbert Kenith Chesterton

This installation is an exploration of the colour white and how changes in artificial and natural lighting give rise to significant shifts in the perceived colour of the installation, and hence the 'feel' and moods that the installation project upon the viewer.

Cosmic latte is located in an atrium with full-length glass windows that allow copious amounts of natural light into the space. Natural white yarn was strung up in a way that mimics light rays or a stringed musical instrument. The inter-play of light(both natural and artificial) and shadow on the yarn creates warm and cold tints that differ depending on time and weather. The viewer is encouraged to walk amongst the yarn and observe the colour variations. It is as though an invisible conductor is conducting his very own musical piece.

White is a colour that is lacking in hue. It can be the absence of colour and also the blending of all colours.  White can be multi-coloured like a chameleon depending on where it is positioned. Because of its inherent luminosity, it is affected by its surroundings and lighting.
