Job - New Barrack Tavern Steel wall mural

This is my favourite project to date. Steph and Kev from the New Barrack Tavern asked me to create them a wall piece for their new function room. It was a very open brief but they wanted something with the wow factor and to represent the pub in all its glory.

Material - Stainless Steel, It was a no brainer for me to create the mural out of stainless steel. Representing the industry past and present on and around Penistone Road.
Design - I wanted to create a montage of Penistone Road with the New Barrack Tavern as the focal point of the piece. I set about sketching the landmarks and working with Steph and Kev to see what they wanted to include. I didn't want to over complicate the detail on the landmarks, I wanted to pick out the certain elements that if you know them you will know what they are. But ultimately I wanted the steel to do the talking.
Landmarks - New Barrack Tavern Pub, Sheffield Dog Track, Hillsborough Park, Wards End Steelworks Sign, The Barracks. Hillsborough Football Stadium, Gas Tower, Pigeon Coops, Tram, Terraced Houses, Hills around the valley, Revolving ad stand.

Stage 1 - I set about designing a montage of Penistone Road and sketching out its landmarks.
Stage 2 - I then re drew my sketches in Adobe Illustrator so I could play around with the layout in vector form.
Stage 3 - To give Steph and Kev a bit of reassurance and to give them a real feel for what the montage could turn into I made a mock up out of cardboard. This really helped them visualise what I was creating for them.
Stage 4 - Laser cutting. I turned my vector illustration in to different sections/layers and laid them out on a flat art board to send to the laser cutters. Everything was cut out of 2x 2mm thick 2440x1220mm stainless steel sheets.
Stage 5 - I printed out a template to help me place all the cut sections out.
Stage 6 - The making. I built up each section using locators and silicon then erected it in my studio as a test run using split batons.
Stage 7 - I took the sections of steel down from my studio, wrapped them up safe and piece by piece delivered and erected at the New Barrack. It was very time consuming to make sure every piece fit and was level but everyone was very pleased with the outcome.

The best way to view this mural is in real life so pop down to the Barrack, have a pint and see it in all its glory.
