A Matter Of Time is Yellow Bird Projects first film, showing the story of Kathryn Calder from The New Pornographers. How she became entwined with the world of rock and roll and how music helped when she was hit with the news her mother had ALS. Deciding to return home becoming her full time care-giver, Kathryn set about recording her first solo album from her family home, in time for her mum to hear it before she was taken by the fatal disease.

 

A Matter of Time illustrates the bravery and compassion that can bloom from struggle. How even the most enduring battles can conjure unimaginable feats of strength and triumph against unexplainable forces. This is an inspirational story about courage in the face of disease. It’s about letting difficult experiences meet artistic impulses and making a positive difference through music.

 

I was asked to design the poster and create the visual language for it using the film as inspiration. I worked closely with YBP to create this poster – acting as Art Director we commissioned German artist Valentin Fischer to create the beautiful portrait of Kathryn while trying to communicate all of the different emotions we wanted to get across. It was important for us to reflect both the aspects of home and music in the portrait as the film reflects heavily on both – so he used a mobile which can be seen in the film and the mic from her recording sessions while creating the album to hint at both, but keeping the main feature as Kathryn.

 

It’s a beautiful film – heartbreaking but inspiring at the same time. I can’t imagine anything scarier than losing my mum, and Kathryn turned that process into something amazing, and Yellow Bird Project have done an epic job at showing the story in this film.
