The main aim of this project is to create a space commemorating the former inhabitants of Białystok and the surrounding area. It might seem that there would at least be a cemetery where the families would be able to pray for their dead loved
ones but due to the unfortunate events, the remains are not resting where they should. The proposed building was divided into three parts: the courtyard, a zone of prayer with chapels and a place where the bones lie. The first part consists of
144 columns made of wood with cracks which symbolizes the broken life. The number of 144 (12x12) refers
to the number 14400 means "myriad": "And I saw, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the animals and the elderly, and the number of them was myriads and thousands of thousands" (Revelation. 5.11). The columns
represent the people who go from chaos to order, which is salvation. The second part is the prayer hall with chapels of 5 religions: daism, Islam, Catholicism, Orthodoxy and Protestantism. Each of them is pointed in its right direction: synagogue to the Jerusalem, the mosque in Mecca, the orthodox church as in a cemetery to All Saints', the catholic church as in a chapel in the Farny cemetery to Christ the Savior, and the other church to John the Baptist. All chapels have one part in common - the courtyard. Between them I designed a staircase, where you can sit, walk around the chapels or watch ceremonies. The third part is the "Garden of Eden" from the "tree of life" with the bones of the dead. In this point there are some old tombstones commemorating the dead. The whole area has been buried in the ground to create an intimate atmosphere that helps to focus on the prayer. The materials I used are reinforced concrete, wood, glass and
old bricks from buildings supposed to be demolished from Mlynowa street. Those bricks are only used
as a decoration because their poor condition is not suitable for con struction material.
