Portable Solar Heater

YEAR 2, Unit 3 – Off Grid

Project 1 Task:
Project 1 stakes your territory. What will you study? Indigenous ecologies? Forgotten communities? Bio-technological hybrids? Novel energy sources? New urban communities? We will be working at 1:1 to produce a transient laboratory, a charting device to record the site we will inhabit, back-pack sized, deployable, doubling as a shelter for the cold desert nights. Adaptability and site-specificity are the guiding principles that ensure survivals in extreme conditions. Innovative materials, digital fabrication methods and a radical attitude to sustainability will harness the latent potential of wind and weather. In December we will embark on a road trip. The old route 66 will be our guide. At night our camp will be set-up along lonely mountain ranges, in ghost towns, dried lakebeds and abandoned farmsteads. En route, the glitz of Las Vegas' strip reminds of a time of abundance. “Tri-Bar” sites, used to focus camera lenses of satellites in orbit, will direct our attention to the skies. The size of the Hoover dam re-aligns the perception of scale. Duplicates of Afghani towns built by the military set a curious monument to a distant reality.
