I designed this praxinoscope as an exploration of early moving image techniques. The praxinoscope was an improved follow on from the zoetrope, giving greater clarity of image. Using mirrors to reflect the image at the right time, these devices (as well as the projecting praxinoscope) laid the groundwork for the film projector. I was fascinated by the craftsmanship of early praxinoscope designs and the dedication it would have taken to make. The 'Theatre Optique' techniques presented by Emile Reynaud required him to hand paint hundreds of glass slides.

I wanted to design an build a praxinoscope using modern techniques and materials. Here the frame is made from black acrylic (perspex) which had been designed on AutoCad and cut out using a laser cutting machine. The images used are photographs taken on a digital camera.
