The appeal of some artworks is only apparent when admiring them up close in person, and in order to convey the true beauty of that artwork when depicting it in a photograph, a graphic designer needs to devise some way in which to replicate that elusive sensuality. Such was the challenge for Kumi Yano's exhibition of hand-dyed silk scarves at Newberry Books in Seattle, Washington in September 2007. Various factors, such as the model's overall appearance, the environment in which she posed, and the words used to describe the textiles, heavily influenced the extent to which viewers could imagine these ephemeral qualities of the artwork.

Atsue Salel graciously modeled the scarves in a secluded grove at the University of Washington campus. In order to direct the viewers' attention to the vibrant appearance of the scarves, the remainder of her outfit was restricted to relatively neutral colors. Kumi's green scarves beautifully complimented the surrounding foilage and created the impression that Atsue was being embraced - quite literally - by her environment.
Image 3. Detail: Atsue's portrait. Extensive editing with Photoshop accentuated the appearance of both the artwork and its model.
Image 4. Postcard, reverse view. Kumi Yano's name is written in Present Condensed, the same font used in Newberry Books' general signage.
Image 5. Postcard, reverse view, detail: text. The goal in arranging this text was a balanced, orderly composition that gracefully leads a viewer's eye to key words and communicates the elegance of Kumi's craft art.
