"Woman the Hunter" for Scientific American

i did the cover for the november issue of scientific american as well as the inside spread that you see above for “the theory that men evolved to hunt and women evolved to gather is wrong” by cara ocobock and sarah lacy. it was wonderful to work on this project because i got to try my hand at drawing something inspired by southern european cave paintings

a funny story about this one is that i originally read the response from my art director on this one, michael mrak, wrong due to being extremely tired during mid september when I drew this and made a full illustration with the incorrect color palette (having switched the number with that desired for the cover). i had to quickly remake this whole illustration in the right color palette over about 24 hours which is a rush for me. i think it still turned out pretty nicely considering how fast ti had to come together!

this piece is inspired by the style of art deco meeting those cave paintings, and showing scenes of women hunting with spears as they may have in the paleolithic. the unusual color palette (the pinks, lavenders, and greens were not what comes to mind when you think of the paleolithic, at least for me) was a real treat to try out
