The website for Kagedo Japanese Art has gone through many changes over the past ten years, and many individuals were involved with its development. From 2006-2011, I was involved in photographing the artwork, editing the photographs in Photoshop, and maintaining the website content as artworks were acquired and sold. The website was dramatically expanded in 2008, and hundreds of items were added. A second expansion occurred the following year, and several hundred more works were added. In 2011, I had an opportunity to revise the overall structure and coding of the site. It was originally coded entirely in HTML and CSS, but with volume of material that the site held and the complexity with which the material was organized, coding each thumbnail by hand seemed an inefficient use of time. At the same time, the gallery owners were very particular about the appearance of each page and the order in which the thumbnails appeared on that page, so automating the layout of thumbnail pages via PHP was not an option either. Ultimately, we achieved a satisfactory compromise: the images were assigned numeric file names, an array of those file names was inserted at the head of the page, and a PHP function was used to read from the array and arrange the images accordingly. In doing so, swapping the position of images became as simple as changing the order of the file names within the aforementioned array.
