Archer's Delight

Super Rad t-shirt design and skateboard deck concept – 2009 / 2014
The initial inspiration behind this design came from a previous sculptural work of art I produced involving a wooden hand-painted target, accompanied by a series of colored-wax squirt guns. That sculpture in turn was inspired by the work of Jasper Johns, a neo-dada/pop artist who frequently painted targets. By combining Pop Art with pop culture – the whimsical violence of this illustration is emphasized by the juxtaposition of the cartoon animals with the target.
Additional inspiration was drawn from the brightly painted wooden jigsaw puzzles I played with as a kid – as well as state fairs, carnivals, and juvenile American Indian imagery. For the skateboard deck, the design was adjusted to fit a mini-cruiser – a small skateboard which easily fits in your locker, suitcase, or under a beachfront bar stool. The board design was submitted to boardpusher.com’s Third Thursday skateboard design contest for November 2014.
