Brief

"I  need you to design HANDI2000, a friendly house-keeping-retro-looking robot."
"It's a 40 min movie, and there are going to be two actresses playing the roll of HANDI,
both of them will need a HANDI-suit.

Oh, and by the way: No after effects will be used!"

HOW TO DESIGN HANDI2000
Inspiration

I started by trying to define the looks and the style of this friendly looking character.
I got inspired by looking at simple looking robots and Art Deco elements.
Initial form development

I started to explore different looks for the character by using pencil sketches.
3D CAD character development - Stage 1

Once the basic forms were realized i started building the suit in 3D,
interpetating the looks as a suit of 'boxes' that relates to real life human proportions.
3D CAD charecter development - Stage 2

Developing a friendlier,'retro' look.
3D CAD development - Stage 3

  Details: parting lines, ventilation areas,
shaft details, cooling ribs etc.
Final 3D CAD design

HOW TO BUILD HANDI2000
Suit Development - Stage 1

I started building mockups and initial suit models from 'Flexiboard' and tried them out on mannequins.
Second stage was trying the suit on a real person with full movement, a task which required a lot of adjustments.
Suit Development - Stage 2

In order to enable both flexibility of movement and rigidness of form, I searched and found a new material - 'Flexifoam'.
