GRPH 421 Project 3: Mogabay Kids
Mongabay is an international organization that aims to increase plant awareness and appreciation. Mongabay Kids is a subsection that is aimed specifically at children. They were seeking more videos to excite kids about plants while also prioritizing conservation.
Research
My group started with research on the company and conservation as a whole. We thought of multiple avenues to take for our animation.
Storyboards
The storyline we eventually stuck with takes place in the Amazon Rainforest. It follows the journey of a Mangrove propagule from it's mother tree to a pelican's mouth to the bottom of a shoe and eventually back to the river to take root.

Mongabay Website Description
The life of the Mangrove tree is anything but ordinary. These trees store more carbon than
terrestrial forests, they help fight coral bleaching and climate change, and are home to many species off the coast of the Amazon. They provide natural infrastructure and protection, as well as prevent erosion and absorb storm surge impacts during hurricanes. Visually, Mangrove trees are unique because their roots can be seen above ground. These roots function as ecosystems for several animals like the mangrove tree crab, as well as the many species of birds and fish. In this video, you will see a young propagule seed find his way back home after he leaves its Mother tree. You will see this propagule travel through the three main seed dispersal methods; animals, water, and humans in order to make it back to his designated habitat. Will he find his way back home? Click play to find out! This video was constructed by three graphic design majors at the University of Nebraska Lincoln: Breann Matlock, Payton Becwar, and Kacee Kaufman. This concept was chosen with the intention to educate children about the amazing life of the Mangrove tree. Most children, living outside of the Amazon Rainforest, will never get the chance to see a Mangrove tree in its natural habitat, nor be taught about how essential they are. With hopes to bring awareness to this issue, these three students have created an animation to help spread the word and fascinate children about the amazing life of plants.
