Galway and Aran Islands

June 14, 2022 - Galway nightlife & Aran Islands

We went out in Galway, pretty much our entire tour group to one bar that was open to wee hours of the morning. I don't know how the boys did it, but they drank Guinness after Guinness each night. They played a game where you take one sip of the beer, and try to get your beer at a mark between the word Guinness and the little harp symbol logo. Usually they played it where if you lost, you would buy the next round.

A baby Guinness is 2 oz of coffee flavored liquor, or Kalua, topped with 1/2 ounce of Irish cream Liqueur. It's called a baby Guinness as it looks like a miniature pint of an actual beer. It goes down pretty smooth. This was another favorite of our tour group to try out.

We stayed out past one in Galway before waking up early to catch a ferry to the Aran Islands. There are three islands, Inisheer, Inishmaan, and Inishmore, we traveled to Inishmore - the largest island, for a day for biking and exploring the island. The Aran Islands are known for their wool sweaters. Some of the group after getting a bike went to an ancient fort called Dun Aonghasa, while others biked around looking at church ruins, beaches, seals, and the stone wall covered land.

Chelsea, Zak, Kyle, and I biked around the whole island. We stopped to see some cows, seals, and to take pictures along the way. There wasn't much to do on the island, so we just kept going all the way from one side to the next. For a small island, there were a few steep hills, but the weather was beautiful and the company was cheery. For some reason, Zak thought it was hilarious to try and get songs stuck in our heads - so upon seeing some seals on the beach, it prompted him to sing 'Kissed by a rose' by the band Seal. To this day, whenever I hear that song or it randomly pops up, I think back to this day.

Stopping for lunch at the local store, we all grabbed some coffees and sat down to eat. I think we were all so overtired from continuously being on the move, staying out late, and the bike riding - we may have been a little delirious. Anything was funny. The boys would play the game ' Odds' are and do the most ridiculous things. I remember the ferry ride back, I had bought some gum at the store - and it was the worst mint gum you could have in your life. it was like chalk, and it stung your eyes to smell it. I sneakily ask Zak if he wanted some, and him not knowing any better, took some. He immediately put it in his mouth and the look of pure terror came across his face and he started chewing it and he looked back at me. I started cackling profusely - so loud, it woke up Kyle and Chelsea from their mid boat ride naps. Pay back for the terrible song.

Our next stop, Londonderry, or Derry as they call it.

Cheers! x
