Carlo Maria Rossi and Penny Kwan, a multimedia artists duo as well as the founders of No.Name Studio is pleased to work with “The Soul of Wushu”, the studio run by SMG on the project 《Experiencing China “The Soul of Wushu”》 in promoting traditional Chinese culture at the 2019 Venice Biennale.
CONCEPT

Under the theme of “MAY YOU LIVE IN INTERESTING TIMES” this year, the Chinese pavilion initiates its program around the idea of “Re(睿)”, which means wisdom in Chinese. The curator “takes the pavilion as a communication system, in the hope that through the construction of the exhibition management system, it will integrate artificial intelligence, new media, and the traditional logic of the Chinese art, intersect the parallel world, the virtual and reality, and hence create a multidimensional experience beyond time and space.”

THE PROJECT: (WHUSU) CHINESE MARTIAL ARTS

As one of the most iconic symbols of Chinese culture,  Wushu (Chinese martial arts) is more than a system of physical exercise, as it encompasses significant philosophical and cultural concepts and has long-standing impacts on generations.

Echoing the theme, Carlo Maria Rossi and the visual artist Penny Kwan collaborate with two calligraphy masters, Qiu Pixiang and Wong Hon Chi, putting their calligraphies on the gallery wall that instantly transforms the context of the space. It also serves as a prelude of the following martial art space. The video is designed to be played in a dark room, integrating the sound mimicking the performer’s breath rhythm, which provides audiences an unprecedented interactive immersive visual and audio experience created by full CG virtual images.

This project transcends borders between the past and the future, the East and the West. By breaking the stereotype of the martial arts performance and transforming it into a more comprehensive sensory experience, Carlo Maria Rossi hopes to bring to the fore the potent of technology in promoting cultural experience in our lives.

The good things never die, and technologies allow the experiencing of them to be more accessible for the general public.

The second gallery, “martial arts and science fiction” designed by Carlo Maria Rossi and Penny Kwan showing the work of a full CG video and audio installation, re-contextualizing the performer into a futuristic environment. During the creating process, the performer Tang Jiahui wears special devices for Capturing the trajectory of the Changquan movement.

The performer is regarded as the opponent of the ball, while it also mirrors himself. He keeps challenging himself to break through the limit. The ball is the incarnation of oneself in another dimensional space, reflecting the nature of the martial artist's self-existence.
This work emphasizes both the digital sensory brought out by the sense of speed and the new visual experience of the digitized motion trajectory. The vitality of martial arts, the spirit of the new generation of Chinese youth, and more importantly, the power of technology and arts that make the transcendence of space and discipline possible are what the project hopes to convey to the World.
