the north face  //  fall 2013
This was a short apparel design project I completed over a long weekend. It’s a collection of four active jackets (hard shell, soft shell, wind, fleece) that share a cohesive design language. I wanted to clean-up and speed-up the brand’s iconic color blocking in a purposeful way that highlights function with an aesthetic that is both honest and dynamic.
Before ideating concepts, I wanted to hone in on the exact type of person who would be using the product; what their needs are functionally, aesthetically, and emotionally.

This person lives and works in an urban environment. They strive to live an active lifestyle, but may not actually make it to the  ‘great outdoors’ as much as they’d like. They are drawn to outdoor activities that mesh with the urban environment, such as cycling and climbing in gyms. Their ideal outerwear alludes to technical performance, but in a utilitarian and sophisticated manner.
I begain exploring various feature placement like pockets and main zipper layouts, as well as overall style lines and color-blocking opportunities, while keeping the North Face brand identity in mind.
This is the collection of jackets, each sharing a common design language. The iconic North Face 1/3 color-blocking is retained, but in a cleaner and more streamlined fashion. The darker color blocks also inform function of a more durable fabric or finish on high wear points.
This will be the most usable and desirable piece from the collection. A more premium price would be justified by more premium features, materials, and overall performance.
This bare-bones wind shell would be made with the lightest materials and construction, but also sport key features that add value and elevate performance.
This would be the go-to shell for all clear weather days. Schoeller c_change stretch woven with nanosphere top makes this a great balance of protection and athletic performance.
This sleek hardface fleece would be a great mid layering piece or outer shell, suitable for both the trail and the city.
This is a set of concept colorways. It mostly consists of sophisticated and subtle shades that would be suitable for any activity in town or out of town, but with some attention grabbing options to brighten up the collection as a whole.
This set takes a step out of the North Face safe-zone and into more fun and expressive culture
