UAMS Find-a-Doc Plugin, 2020

While working on a new WordPress theme for UAMS web properties, we needed to update the structure and style of the UAMS Find-a-Doc plug, the tool presented to users to look up our clinical providers. While we were doing this, we determined that there was a need to eliminate static content for our providers and services so that we could eliminate issues with outdated content, like having to track down all references to a particular provider when they left.

I helped plan, design and develop a plugin that creates a dynamic connection between all the relevant types of content: providers, conditions, treatments, areas of expertise, locations. Later, we also added clinical resources to this list of connections. With this system, we would associate all of the relevant content with a provider: their locations, the conditions they treat, the treatments they perform, their areas of expertise, and any related clinical resources. In turn, each of those other types of content would have similar connections.

When any provider left, or when any treatment was no longer performed at UAMS Health, we could draft or trash the single item, and all of the connected content would no longer display that outdated content.

The secondary benefit of this system is that users should never reach a dead end. If they are researching a particular condition on our site, they can click through to find information on providers who treat that condition, how we treat it and/or where we treat it.

The inputs for all of the attributes for each provider, location, etc. are heavily-regimented to foster consistency across all profiles, as inconsistencies in design and in available information was also an issue with the previous version of this plugin. Some of the inputs are open text, but many are based on custom taxonomies. These taxonomy inputs also allow us to create FacetWP filters for users to narrow down their search on the various archive pages.

In a UX audit performed on uamshealth.com by Geonetric, they said, "The dynamic content that's happening throughout the site is really sophisticated. At Geonetric, we know how difficult this is to do well. But this is really something that is setting your organization apart, not only in your market, but really I would say nationwide for all the clients that we've worked with. Really connecting dynamically — by that, I mean that the areas of expertise content is dynamically displaying related providers, related locations. And this is all happening vice versa throughout the site. So this helps users intuitively navigate across the site. It's also a wonderful way to just visually show the breadth of your services and put human faces on your providers. Everything is just working really well together perfectly. And what's more, your site users are using these features really effectively. We've seen that in the data, as well. So a great big kudos on how this is working on the site today."
