Tiger with Butterflies

Fresco
The Tiger with Butterflies is my second experimental Fresco illustration using custom pattern brushes created with Adobe Capture. Fab Filly was my first.

With this illustration, I figured out how to better control the pattern brush application by painting flat tonal areas first. The process is outlined below. I'm very happy with this result and eager to see where the pattern brush exploration takes me next.
Like most of my illustrations, this started with a flat vector line art drawing of the subject. Default vector brush settings are used to create a sharp coloring book style drawing as shown here.
With the outline complete, the tiger was then colored with flat vector shapes. Each color shape is on a separate layer for blending and opacity options, and to act as masks for the patterns.
The screen capture below outlines the steps for adding the pattern textures:
1. A flat shape is drawn on a new layer
2. A pixel Ribbon pattern brush is found in My Library (custom brushes are created and saved to the Library from Adobe Capture)
3. Brush 47 is selected (I should give them better names)
4. The pattern brush is painted on a layer above the flat color layer and clipped to the transparency of the flat color shape, effectively masking the pattern. (see downturned arrow next to layer icon)
5. The blend mode of the pattern layer is set to Overlay.

This screenshot shows the completed colored Tiger with the layers panel visible. There are a lot of layers in this illustration. The layers are grouped to keep them organized.
– ADOBE CAPTURE PROCESS –
A few different patterns were used for the tiger coloring. The larger pattern with the butterfly started with the Pattern Builder tool in Adobe Capture. Pattern Builder is found nested with Import Image shown in the Capture screen below.
The pattern is then used to create a custom brush. In Capture tap on any pattern to select it. Then tap the recycle icon at the bottom of the screen. From here you can create a Fresco Ribbon brush of the pattern. See my Fab Filly project for more information about creating Fresco Ribbon pattern brushes.
Additional patterns are used in the background. The butterflies were painted with Brush 49 shown in the screen capture below. The butterfly pattern was created from an Adobe stock image of a pink butterfly isolated on a white background. The butterfly pattern was then recycled to a Fresco Ribbon brush.
The green background butterflies are painted with the same pink butterfly brush and colorized with a luminance layer blend mode.
A custom pixel image brush was used in the grass. Capture's Edit Crop settings provide tail, body, and head regions for brushes. The body region stretches along the path stroke when painted, creating an organic look.
