Federal Health IT Strategic Plan

The Federal Health IT Strategic Plan

The Federal Health IT Strategic Plan outlines how the government intends to use health IT to promote secure access to electronic health information (EHI) over the next 5 years. The plan was developed with input from more than 25 federal agencies and was informed by nearly 100 public comments. We were tasked with designing the 50-page plan, supporting promotional graphics, and conducting 508-compliance remediation of the report.

Objective:
The objective was to educate stakeholders interested in understanding the federal perspective. The plan is intended as a tool to engage both federal and private sector stakeholders. The solution was a document that was easy to digest, modify, and deploy. Diagrams were designed in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign was used for layout. InDesign’s tagging features assisted with 508 compliance preparation and we completed final remediation in Adobe Acrobat.

Approach
We advocated for using the Adobe Creative Suite, which would allow us to leverage our expertise to produce a polished design while keeping pace with an aggressive project timeline. We worked in phases and built on the draft visuals, moving the document through iterations quickly and smoothly, and editing up until the day before release. We did this while concurrently creating social media graphics, banners for the homepage, blog, and e-blast promotion, and imagery for webinars and presentations.

Impact
The unveiling of the plan was met with positive sentiment across social media, with users referencing and sharing screenshots of diagrams and links to the resource. The influence of the plan can be seen in the DoD and VA Interoperability Modernization Strategy, and was credited by Lauren Thompson, Ph.D., of the Federal Electronic Health Record Modernization program office who said, “The plan has been instrumental in our own efforts to support high-quality healthcare for Service members, Veterans, and their families. We use it as a main reference point to develop the Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs Interoperability Modernization Strategy, ensuring DoD and VA are supporting the common goals of the government’s federal health IT strategy.”
