During the pandemic, internal communication became more important than ever as teams strived to capture some level of normalcy amid an unprecedented experience. We were asked to give ONC’s monthly internal newsletter a makeover and to analyze the template for any UX, visual, or process improvements that could increase audience enjoyment and take efficiency up a notch.

One emphasis of this redesign included a focus on a feature story at the top of every issue while maintaining a consistent template for the remaining content. For December’s feature, we were given a list of highlights and organizational accomplishments in an extraordinary year of remote federal service. We utilize Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator to compose visuals and animate content for dissemination via Salesforce.

Aiming for Efficient Evolution
We are always cognizant of how we spend our time with government work, so we don’t often expend our resources for content with an internal audience. In this case, we wanted to produce the best results while ensuring that we made the process as lean as possible, so we continue to incrementally test and improve the product with each release.

Analyzing Impact
From the March 2020 issue to the March 2021 issue, the newsletter enjoyed a 173% increase in open rate and a 31% increase in click rate. Feedback from the content team has been overwhelmingly positive as they’ve mentioned that the editorial style of the graphics we’ve adopted has brought excitement to the assignment, and the evolving quality of the results remains an ongoing point of pride.
