SUSTAINABLE CAMPUS
Politecnico di Milano | Architectural Design Studio 02
professor: Remo Dorigati, Gianluca Lugli
team: Anton Kotlyarov, Giulia Galluzzo, Giulia Cielo
place: Milan | Politecnico di Milano | Leonardo campus
goal: analysis of the campus problems | design proposal to improve existing situation according to 5 points of sustainability
date: march-july 2013
After analysis we pointed out two main problems of the campus: fragmentation (architectural department separated from engineering departments) and lack of public spaces. Our idea is to improve connections between parts of the campus and create flexible spaces that can host different activities. The element that makes possible to sew up different parts is the new roof which crosses the campus from north to south along three significant axes and connects the Politecnico to the Università Statale.
1. Analysis
Accessibility
Direction East - West is working well. Direction North - South is not working. Some places inside the campus do not have any activity, because they are closed by the street side and don't have any function.
Sequence of platforms
After analysis, campus appears for us as a sequence of platforms. We devided platforms to 4 groups, acording to scale and types of activities in it.
Staircases is an example of the smallest scale group. Staircases appart from its main function becomes small public space (so called 15 min space), people use it during the break to go out enjoy sun, talk, smoke or have a cup of coffe.

Outdoor study places, is an another group of platforms, which work very well, but only in warm seasons.
2. General Strategy
improve connections between separated parts of the campus
architectural department - engineering departments - Università Statale
Main scheme
connective element - roof, creation of spatial connection, shadow becomes a pavement.
system of platforms becomes space for activities
study of the interaction of platforms, roof and context.
masterplan
red - platforms
3. Platforms & activities
system of platforms creates diversity of closed\open (winter\summer) spaces devoted to studiy, exhibition and completely free areas for student activities like parties, concerts and other temporary events.
exhibition, job fair
outdoor study space
system of platforms offers flexible set of functions
garden
3. Roof
study of shadow change during the seasons
more sun light during winter and more shade during summer.
The panels consist of 3 different materials, that diffuse natural light below creating comfortable spaces for study and leisure.
