Copernicus Science Center
Visual information system

The wayfinding system of the Copernicus Science Center in Warsaw was designed to highlight the building’s architecture and surroundings in a subtle, but clear manner. Mamastudio’s goal was to create a unique visual system using the characteristic form of the building as inspiration. Irregular forms visible on architectural plans are repeated in the shapes of information modules, signs and icons. The applied typography repeats the shapes and rhythm of the icons to ensure further consistency. Visual associations with the museum are additionally enhanced by the use of colors already present in the institution’s identification system.

The very large museum is built on an open plan resulting in a minimal number of walls on which signage could be placed. Mamastudio’s solution was to create special three-dimensional and freestanding forms with maps and plans to serve as a source of directional information for the visitor. Minimal use of colors, simplicity and consistency of design ensure visibility on the multi-colored background of numerous exhibitions and rotating exhibits.

The resulting wayfinding system is intuitive and easily navigable. It is presented in two languages (Polish and English) and is clearly recognizable without being overwhelming or distracting attention away from the exhibitions.
