In September 2009, Vogue Australia celebrated its 50th anniversary by featuring the work of British fashion illustrator David Downton. He sketched Cate Blanchett in vintage styles that recalled the days before photography. The illustrations served as a reminder of the history behind the magazine, as well as fashion's journey through the years.

Drawing inspiration from this, I decided to draw sketches based on the theme of one of my favourite stories. 'A Bright Idea' by Louisa May Alcott, written in the late 1800s. It is a short story based on a milliner. Using flat metal calligraphy tools, crow quill pen and ink, I created a set of Vogue covers if to show how it would look had it existed back then.
