Brief
Update and improve bins for Cornwall Council for use across Cornwall.
Research
Working with the Cornwall Council Waste Department and interviewing the manager of Biffa’s Truro waste station I made a list of requirements to improve the general waste bins in Cornwall, crucially:
- Hygiene.
- Seagull proof.
- Easy to clean.
Design Development
I tested iterations of my designs using full scale cardboard models. These highlighted weaknesses in my designs to improve:
- Ergonomics of emptying.
- Anthropometrics for the users.
- Ease of use.
Design Detail
A lip under the lid allows users with difficulties operating the foot pedal to easily open the bin lid with their finger.
A universal key lock to secure container access door.
Design Solution
A hygienic foot pedal operated general waste bin with a sensor, which keeps the waste collection services updated when the bin needs emptying.
The technology plots the most efficient route to empty the bins.
