樱桃山公羊案 / The Famous Goat Trial

樱桃山公羊案 (The Famous Goat Trial) is a Chinese translation of an evergreen Slovenian tale Kozlovska sodba v Višnji Gori by Josip Jurčič. The short story was written in 1867 and has been translated into 13 different languages, with Chinese being the latest edition.

The Famous Goat Trial is also my first ever illustrated & designed children's picture book.

The tale is set in a small town of Višnja Gora in Slovenia’s Dolenjska region (Lower Carniola), when Lisec - a goat of a poor peasant boy named Lukež Drnulja gets himself in a bit of trouble, by stumbling upon a lush garden of Andraž Samorezec. Andraž, very upset by the goat’s "gluttonous intentions" and nursing a previous grudge against Lukež, decides to sue the goat in a court of law. And so the humorous trial unfolds. The hero of the trial becomes the clever but odd old man Krivostegno, who resolves the famous goat trial, as a Slovenian proverb says - In a manner that the wolf is no longer hungry and the goat is still whole. The story in its ridiculousness still serves as a contemporary commentary on interpersonal relations and the absurdities of everyday life.

The book was published by Tourism Association Višnja Gora, 2018.
